what temperature does cast aluminum melt?
I have an aluminum intake manifold that a guy screwed up when he was powder coating it. The powder needs to be burnt off but ZI don't want to weaken the metal. How hot can I get it without making the bolt holes weak where they might break off when I go to install it?
Actually, alloys melt at LOWER temperatures than pure metals: 2024 starts to melt at about 935 F, for example, which is why you have to be careful when salt bath brazing that alloy. Yet it’s not ‘melting’ that you should be concerned about, but rather the temperature at which you’ll damage the heat treatment, and hence the mechanical properties.
Unfortunately, the correct answer to THAT question depends on what alloy you have, and whether it’s even heat treated in the first place. A common cast alloy is 356 aluminum, and it IS heat treated to enhance the mechanical properties, and it gets tempered at 155 C (311 F) or so. If you can stay below that temperature, you’ll do no damage to the mechanical properties like yield strength or elongation or fracture toughness. Going above it will reduce the strength, and might make the cast part more brittle.
Yet if your cast part is not 356 but some other alloy, and if it is not heat treated, then perhaps you can go as high as 800 F with a torch, maybe hotter if you have more control, as in a furnace.
